Radio Speed Limit
EUROLEISURE UK has been operating 'arrive & drive' kart tracks for many years, and is well aware of the large range of ages and driving abilities which are encountered. Although it is common practise to adjust the throttle stop in for young children, it is often hard to predict the speed which each person can cope with. The result is that some people get a slow boring drive and do not come back, while others are frightened and will not come back.
Several radio systems exist which provide a 'PANIC BUTTON' for the operator which stops all the karts if the operator sees a potentially dangerous situation. These work either by cutting the ignition or by operating a solenoid on the throttle. Cutting the ignition causes unburned mixture to pass through the engine and out of the exhaust, damaging any catalytic converters fitted and causing a potential fire hazzard. It also causes other mechanical problems within the engine such as excesive carbon and 'bore wash', leading very quickly to unreliable operation.
EUROLEISURE identified a need to be able to set the kart speed limit by remote control, in addition to providing a panic button. This would allow the operator to adjust the speed up or down during the session so a good driver would not be left on a slow setting for long, and drivers who are obviously struggling could be limited to a lower speed. Despite a search, no existing system was found with this ability so a new system was developed.
